What we look for in vacation clerks and graduates

The quality of our people is one of the distinguishing characteristics of Minter Ellison. We have a welcoming, energetic culture which is informed by our core values: integrity and trust, enduring relationships, balance and excellence.  We place a high value on diversity inthe workplace because it enables us to build teams with a wide range skills and personalities, which in turn allows us to be more creative and flexible in our approach, relate better to our clients, and be more effective in meeting their needs.

Some of the important qualities we look for in our vacation clerks and graduates are:

Team fit. We look for people with ideas and energy who share our values and work well as part of a team. In your interview, discuss team activities you have been involved in and how you contributed to those teams.

Interpersonal skills. We look for engaging, confident individuals who conduct themselves in a professional manner. Being positive, enthusiastic and building rapport with those you meet during the recruitment process will be well regarded.

Initiative: We value the ability to critically think through issues, be proactive and resourceful. When have you have taken a good idea and run with it, adding creativity and flair along the way, and what did it teach you?

Commercial outlook: Understanding how a business works, and being interested in business generally is vital to being a good commercial lawyer. We want to see that you have explored your interests in law through other activities beyond university. We also want to understand why you have chosen to study particular law subjects.

Motivation: Our people take pride in the work they produce and are motivated more by their own personal standards than by external feedback. Equally, they enjoy working with others and achieving results as part of a team. What motivates you, and how have you motivated others to achieve a goal or outcome?

All-round performance: Academic performance is important, but it isn't the only criteria for success at Minter Ellison. While we do look at your grades, what we really look for are well-rounded, focused and energetic individuals who want to be part of our firm and are passionate about what they want to achieve.
